Call In Gay?
Nope.
It’s not that I don’t want too. It has more to do with the fact that everyone at my work place has been really nice and accepting of my sexuality. Even the managers have openly supported who I am and I don’t think it would be right to strike at them like this. Now if I worked somewhere that I couldn’t be myself or had to remained closed off or felt oppressed. Hell yeah I would Call In Gay.
Also, and mind you this isn’t something I bring up much but…
…are these protests really doing any good? Does rallying in the streets actually provoke change? I won’t deny I’m an impatient person. I want something done now. Not just for Californians, but for all the GLBT community across America. I read news articles where we are referred to as ‘sexual jihadists’ –Pat Boone. While racism has finally been driven back to the dark, dank corners of the world, gaycism is becoming a more common phrase. I’m waiting to see signs in store windows that say ‘Straights Only.”
Some say that what we’re missing is a gay figure head. Someone to lead our protests forward with decisive movements and unassailable confidence. We need our own Martine Luther King or Ghandi. The problem there in is that all the gays who are highly publicized enough to fit the mold are not people who’s voices would ring out with that clear authority and justification. They are stars, not leaders. And yes people there is a massive difference. Such leaders just happen, they come and start slowly, and as they rise in notoriety and influence, they bring their people with them to the heights.
And they are willing to die for their cause. Nothing marks a movement like a martyr. Nothing epitomizes a struggle like the outright viewing of hatred for a group like an assassination attempt on a public figure. How sad is this? That we would not only have to create a face for ourselves, but even do so with full knowledge that that person may well be offered up as a sacrifice to the gods of You-Have-To-Earn-This.
Well if that’s what it takes I’ll lead the Million Gay March. I’ll do the speeches and I’ll get shot. If all we need is someone to look gay and proud then fuck it all any one of us who has ever been called a faggot or dyke, any one of us who has even been threatened or beaten up in an empty lunchroom, any one of us who has ever been forced to see a friend cast out or endured an un-accepting environment because of their sexuality is a perfect candidate for our civil rights leader.
So lets draw straws, cause at one point or another we’ve all qualified.
